25 Nov Pastoral Care Introduction
Pastoral care in the context of higher education involves all practices that focus on well-being and where pastoral counsellors or teachers (depending on the type of model) provide social, emotional and spiritual support in order to achieve holistic development in students. Personal tutoring is related, as it reinforces the relation of the student with the university, going beyond the academic support, connecting students with support services. Challenges related to pastoral care include the boundary that tutors and pastoral counsellors should have while they support students, as they could have a lack of knowledge regarding mental health and wellbeing support. Since pastoral care is a well-known and used term in Anglo-Saxon universities, it is important to remark that in other universities, this term is unknown, so pastoral care is achieved through students services. This part of the toolkit contains academic information about pastoral care in HE, as well as one video lecture on the topic and two practical examples presented through infographics and short video presentations.
